THE Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT) has received two new trucks from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources to transport more fish to rural communities.
The two refrigerated trucks – with capacities of 24 tonnes and 3,5 tonne respectively – were bought by the Ministry for N$1,5 million.
‘We mean business. When we say we want all Namibians to eat Namibian fish, we will do what we can to make sure they get this fish. These trucks are proof that we do what we say we are going to do,’ said Fisheries Minister Abraham Iyambo at the handover at Swakopmund.
The demand for fish in rural areas is growing rapidly and is now outstripping the supply, Iyambo said.
‘The two biggest problems were that the fish was very expensive for the poor, and also a lack of transport to distribute the fish,’ Iyambo said. ‘These problems are solved now.’
He said that, with the help of the fishing industry, the trust will sell fish at special prices to the poor.
‘This has affected the trust financially, but our goal is to make sure the people get the fish,’ he said.
Until now the NFCPT had to spend N$1 million a year on truck rental.
‘Now we have our own transport, and we guarantee you that there will be more to come. Now we can take more fish to more of our people,’ Iyambo said.
