KEETMANSHOOP – The secretary seneral of the Democratic Party of Namibia (DPN), Adam Isaak, says the name of the government-owned company Epangelo Mining should be changed from Oshiwambo to English.
Government established Epangelo in December 2009, mainly to secure a piece of Namibia’s uranium cake. Namibia is on track to become the world’s fifth biggest producer of uranium by 2015.’Epangelo’ means ‘government’ in Oshiwambo.Isaak yesterday told Nampa that the DPN feels it is inappropriate for a government company to be given an Oshiwambo name. He suggested that the state-owned company be given an English name that reflects the interests of all the tribes in Namibia. The Oshiwambo name might create an impression that Government is promoting the interests of the Owambo people only.’The fact that English is our official language makes it clear that anything that is of national interest, should be said in English. The same should be done for Epangelo Mining,’ Isaak said. “I am not saying this because I speak a different language from Oshiwambo, but I am just saying the name should be in a language that we can all communicate in,” said Isaak. – Own report and Nampa
