MEMBERS of Parliament were kept up late on Wednesday night by the bucket toilet system.
It was not the only issue that gave MPs a late-night flush of excitement, but it was the one that sparked laughter by the bucketful. To go or not to go was at the heart of debate about whether to keep the bucket toilet system or whether it would be cheaper to re-use human waste through a ‘specialised ecological sanitation system’.Providing laughter for the better part of the night were DTA MP Phillemon Moongo, Nudo leader chief Kuaima Riruako and Dr Moses Amweelo. For Amweelo it depended on which angle you looked at it from.’Human waste can be re-used through the ecological sanitation system,’ he said. That stirred emotions in Moongo.’Don’t talk engineering. Do you think our community in rural areas can use that water?’ he fumed, to the visible amusement of fellow members.’You don’t need flush water in those toilets,’ Amweelo responded. This created more questions in Moongo’s mind.’Since we had floods, how is that water now according to your science?’ he asked.By then Amweelo had had enough of Moongo’s questions.’You will save money and water. I think the Minister understands me. Mr Moongo, people are going high-tech, don’t stay behind,’ he said before sitting down.
