THE Brave Warriors will be in for a surprise when they lock horns with The Namibian’s Shadow Team in an exhibition match on April 12 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium.
The Warriors under former coach Ben Bamfuchile fought off a rigid Shadow team to emerge 4-0 winners in 2007 in Keetmanshoop, but this time, they will face a different test as most players in the Shadow team will aim at proving a point.
The point is to show national team coaches on all levels that they are eligible for selection.
Secondly, they have a mission of proving to club coaches and scouts that their time in the premiership has arrived and some will go with the aim of being signed up for next season’s premiership.
The Shadow team will meet the Warriors on April 12 at 20h30, after a women’s football clash between Okahandja Beauties and Rehoboth Queens.
The Warriors versus Shadow Team match will conclude the festivities on Sunday night, before the final match of The Namibian Newspaper Cup is decided on Monday.
The organisers yesterday conducted a draw for all 13 regions competing at the event, with Oshana proceeding to the winners’ section as defending champions.
Oshana won the competition in 2007 at Keetmanshoop, but Khomas and Omaheke are joint leaders with two cups to their names.
The lead sponsor of the competition, The Namibian newspaper, will invest close to N$1 million in the event, which will be held in Windhoek for the second time.
Previous tournaments took place in Windhoek, Otjiwarongo, Walvis Bay, Gobabis, Mariental and Keetmanshoop.
The draw for the 2009 edition of The Namibian Newspaper Cup is as follows:
April 10, Sam Nujoma Stadium
09h00: Ohangwena v Khomas
11h00: Karas v Erongo
13h00: Otjozondjupa v Oshikoto
15h00: Kavango v Omaheke
17h00: Caprivi v Kunene
19h00: Omusati v Hardap
* Oshana, as defending champions, will meet the winner between Ohangwena
and Khomas.
