The Municipality of Walvis Bay will host the 18th Southern African Inter-Municipal Association Games (SAIMSA) 2024.
The annual sport games bring together municipalities from across southern Africa and aims to foster opportunities for social interaction and encourage physical activity and sportsmanship.
This year’s games, which were launched on 26 July under the theme ‘SADC local authority’s employee wellness, enhanced through sports and recreation’, will take place from 22 to 27 September.
The participants will compete in various sport codes including, soccer, netball, volleyball, snooker/pool, darts, table tennis, lawn tennis, road running, tug of war, fishing/angling, owela/stone games, ring board, athletics, golf, and aerobathon.
The games will take place at various venues, including the Jan Wilken, Narraville and Kuisebmund stadiums, as well as at Swakopmund.
Walvis Bay municipality public relations officer Anita Kaihiva says the games are an opportunity for athletes to demonstrate their skills and for communities to engage in friendly competition and cultural exchange while benefiting local businesses.
“The municipality has been working diligently to ensure that the event will be a resounding success, while preparations have been made to accommodate the influx of the visitors,” she says.
Countries that will bring together over 1 500 participants will include Eswatini, Lesotho, Botswana and Namibia.
