Van Zyl set to defend tennis top spot

MICHIEL van Zyl will try to keep his top ranking when the Kia PTA Tennis Series resumes at the SKW courts this weekend.

The second of nine competitions will start with the Mini and Midi category today at 14h30 and continue with Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced categories on Saturday at 08h00.Van Zyl is ranked number 1 on 200 points after last month’s opening round, ahead of runner-up Robert Riethmueller. Oliver Diggle – the winner of the Intermediate category – earned third position in the overall ranking after the first event. The Beginners’ category winner, Delvin Losper, garnered sufficient points to be ranked sixth overall.Competitors face each other in categories based on skill – disregarding gender and age, and are able to earn points at each tournament to advance in the overall ranking of the series. The number of points awarded to players at each competition depends on the final position at the event as well as the category in which the player competes – more points in an advanced level and less if he enters as beginner. Each player can compete at the level of their choice. However, once a player has earned a certain total number of points in a specific category, they have to advance to the next category at the next tournament. Total prize money of N$20 000 will be awarded at the end of the year to the top three players per gender in the overall ranking, as well as to three players who showed the greatest improvement in the ranking and advancement in skill level throughout the year.
