Van Rhyn impressive in SA

NAMIBIAN go-cart rider Bazill van Rhyn proved his worth as one of the best in southern Africa when he clinched fifth spot in the tough Fourth Leg of the South Africa National Championships held at Swartzkop, South Africa, at the end of last month.

The Namibian managed to hold on to fifth spot among a total of 19 riders, who were all older than him in the race. On Friday, van Rhyn qualified for the second race by ending eighth overall. After a poor start in the first race which left him in the eighth spot, van Rhyn had to start the second race on Saturday in a much better way, which he did.He started on a fast note and that automatically placed him in the seventh spot in the early stages of the competitive event. He was however unable to go past one of the riders who constantly blocked him around the corners.Despite that, the young rider worked hard to get among the top five and he did so by going past his opponents in breakneck fashion. It was high drama on the track as the riders traveled at speeds of at least 132 kilometers per hour, braking hard around the sharp curves.Van Rhyn made his way through to the fourth spot despite having never raced at that track before and he proved that his driving skills are superb.Unfortunately Van Rhyn made a mistake at one of the turns and was forced into the fifth place. The young rider had to be satisfied by ending in fifth position, but had a great average of recording at least 1 minute 5 seconds in every round. The Swartzkop races will be shown tonight at 20h00 on SuperSport 2 on DStv in the ‘Rapid Motion’ programme. The next race will be held in Phakisa, Welkom, on July 28.Van Rhyn is currently Namibia’s only young go-cart racer on the international stage.
