THE Namibian under 19 netball team returned from South Africa in which they produce good performances despite superiority of both South Africa and England in an All Ages tournament held in Johannesburg recently.
Despite only recording two wins, a 26-39 final score against the Sharks and a 19-24 victory against Strelitzias, also from South Africa, the Namibian girls gave a good account of themselves. They scored more than ten points in all their other matches. They drew 33-all against South African side Berlinkas, but were beaten by Diamonds 38-31, in what was a respectable score compared to the seasoned South Africans. They also lost 36-28 against Delta, before putting in a spirited fight against the England under 21 side before going down 36-29.The girls proved their competitiveness in this match, which any other team could have lost by a much bigger margin. The Namibians also kept the under 19 South African side on their toes before going down 34-25 in their last match of the four day tournament. The team is said to have received a lot of praise for the way they performed overall, while their behaviour off the field was also outstanding.Meanwhile, the Namibia Schools Sport Union (NSSU) announced that the national under 17 championships for volleyball and football would be held at Walvis Bay this Saturday. At the same time, the under 13 national football championships will also be held in Windhoek on the same day.On the same weekend, there will also be the national under 17 boys and girls basketball championships in Windhoek. The NSSU also announced that on the weekend of July 28 and 29, the under 16 Clanwilliam Aartappel Netball Tournament, will be held in Clanwilliam, South Africa. The Namibian under 16 team will compete at that tournament.Between September 2 – 5, the under 17 COSSASA Ball Games will be held in Lesotho. These Games will include codes such as netball, football for boys and girls, volleyball for boys and girls as well as basketball for boys and girls. The NSSU has already announced the under 16 and 17 netball teams which will compete in Clanwilliam and at the COSSASA Games in Lesotho. The teams were announced as follows: Under 16: Chanique Ras, M.Liebenberg, Thwaneth Haraes, Unathi Hendricks, Uazuva Mieze, Klesia Kariko, Enthia Damases, Melina Neis, Ripanga Musengua, Vetarapi Ngapite, Nangula Nashandi and Elizna Theron.Under 17: Estie de Witt, Keshia Routh, Tjipetekera Zahambuka, Keshia Kalomo, Corine OŽConnell, Fransie Gerber, Ika Schroer, Reza Gouws, Monique van Zyl, Conradine Frans, Uazeua Keko and Anne-Marie Horn.
