WINDHOEK – The champion of the inaugural Khomas under-17 soccer league will be known on September 29 when the final takes place at the Sam Nujoma Stadium.
The final will be contested between the winners of the two streams which will have their final matches next Wednesday. The Collin Benjamin Soccer Academy is currently leading Stream A with 47 points after 19 games played, while Stream B leader is Civics I with 45 points after 18 matches.S. Bala is second on the log in Stream A with 32 points after 18 matches while Civics II is in third place with 34 points from their 19 games.In Stream B, Khomas Football Academy has 35 points after 18 matches played while in third place is Orlando Pirates with 35 points after 19 league matches played.League Organiser Isack Hamata said two teams will be selected from teams not contesting the final to play a curtain raiser before the final on September 29.The two selected teams will form the core of the Khomas under-17 regional team.Hamata said the winner will be presented with a cash prize of N$5 000 while all other teams up to sixth place will also be rewarded.Twenty-four teams played divided in two streams of 12 teams each played in the league this year, including one women’s team, made up of the senior national team, alias the Brave Gladiators.Unfortunately, the women found the going tough and now features last in Stream B after recording one point in 18 matches.From the Namibia Premier League (NPL) teams only African Stars, Civics, Orlando Pirates and Civics have entered their under-17 development sides.Many in football circles have welcomed the under-17 soccer league, saying that it is needed as most of the Premier League teams have non-existing youth development structures.This pilot project, initiated by the NFA Technical Department, could be introduced countrywide depending on the report by the league administrators.- NampaThe Collin Benjamin Soccer Academy is currently leading Stream A with 47 points after 19 games played, while Stream B leader is Civics I with 45 points after 18 matches.S.
