Unam teams top in night hockey league

BOTH the men and women hockey teams from the University of Namibia (Unam) came out tops as new winners of the Metropolitan Night League finals at Wanderers on Thursday night.

The women from Unam handed DTS a 2-1 defeat after sixty minutes of normal playing time. The Unam men’s team also beat DTS 2-1.Unam already led 2-0 in the opening 15 minutes after both Penny Ankama and Theodora Amutjira hit the net.After thirty minutes DTS, pull their only goal of the game back with their forward, Danelle van Wyk a learner at St. Pauls doing the honours.The Unam girls defended well to keep the DTS attackers who were seeking for an equaliser at bay.It was the team’s first night league crown after ending as runner’s up on three occasions.The men’s final provided some entertaining hockey as the best two teams in the national league competed fiercely for both ball possession and territory.DTS fielded their most talented youngsters like Thomas Duncan, Christoff Buys, Timothy Yates and Dane McAteer.They were assisted by the former trio of the Unam, Demmy Tjiueza, Steven Abel and Sedrick Makati.The experience and cohesion of the Unam team was just to good for DTS.Once again, DTS had to settle for second place in the end as they failed surpass the the goals scored by the talented Heinrich Swartbooi.Dane McAteer scored for DTS.National Field League New comers Hockey cc Team Rehoboth pull a surprise 1-0 victory over DTS II in the men’s reserve league at Doc Jubber Field on Saturday.A sixth minute goal from Quinton Maasdorp was enough to collect maximum points for “the team of the republic”.Former u/18 national players like Petrus van Wyk, Lee van Wyk and Ashley Marquadt put in good performances on the day for the Rehoboth side.The team was formed a few weeks ago by former national team player Erwin Handura and Heinrich Swartbooi.It consist of former and current learners in Rehoboth and with more coaching and improved fitness positive results could be expected from them.Handura said the primary objective is to get the youth active in nation building activities.”Without hesitation there’s talent in Rehoboth and it just need to be developed and further exposed,” he said.In the Premier League for women, Ramblers dismissed DTS 5-1in an easy flowing match.Former Oranjemund striker, Christa Kayser, caused the major damage to DTS with a hat-trick, while the national captain and vice-captain (Silke Pennefarther and Yolande Fourie) each hockey stadium in Pretoria, South Africa.Clubs are urged to forward the names of their potential Under 21 players to the union.Squad training will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 18h30 – 20h00 at the Doc Jubber Field in Olympia.Trials are scheduled for July 31 in Windhoek.The team will be coached by Erwin Handura, assistant coach Bianca Rheeder and manager Marietjie Buys.For more
