Two men died while digging a well at Onamatanga village in the Omusati region on Saturday.
Police say two of three men were removing mud from a water well when one fell while inside and lost consciousness due to the limited oxygen.
“The third man went into the well for the purpose of rescuing the one who was unconscious, but he also fell in the water. Police and community members went to help remove the two men, who were still breathing but were in critical condition,” says commissioner Ismael Basson.
One of the men died upon arrival at the Okahao District Hospital. He has been identified as Fillipus Shakuva (50).
The second man, Ihekeni Selestinu (34), was transferred to the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital but also succumbed to his injuries.
Their next of kin have been informed.
