Two people died when an ambulance crashed into a stationary truck on the Otjiwarongo-Otavi B1 road in the early hours of Tuesday.
The Namibian Police’s head of community affairs in the Otjozondjupa region, senior inspector Maureen Mbeha, in an interview on Tuesday said the deceased’s personal details were unknown to the police.
It is also not certain if they were patients being transported in the ambulance, which had an Oshakati registration number.
Mbeha said the accident occurred around 00h40 on Tuesday, approximately 20 kilometres south of Otavi.
She said the ambulance was headed to Otavi when it hit the truck, which had broken down while heading in the same direction.
“The impact of the accident was so severe that two men who were in the ambulance, both Namibian, died on the spot,” she said.
Four other occupants aged 26, 28, 29 and 39 years old, as well as the 29-year-old male driver, sustained slight to serious injuries.
A man and two women sustained serious head injuries and multiple body fractures and were immediately transferred to Windhoek for further medical attention, Mbeha said.
The 38-year-old Zambian male truck driver survived the accident with no injuries.
Police investigations into the matter continue.
