Tsvangirai seeks meeting, Mugabe on holiday

HARARE – Zimbabwe’s opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has requested a meeting with President Robert Mugabe in an effort to salvage a power-sharing deal, an opposition spokesman said on Friday.

Tsvangirai and Mugabe signed a unity pact last September but the agreement appears to be unravelling after a dispute over the control of key ministries and the abduction of several opposition and human rights activists.
Meanwhile, it is reported that Mugabe is on holiday in Malaysia. A South African newspaper reported over the weekend that around US$92 000 had been transferred from the Zimbabwe central bank to an account in Malaysia in order to finance the trip. President Mugabe is accompanied by his wife, Grace, and their four children.
In related news, a Zimbabwean online newspaper recently reported that Zimbabwe’s cash-strapped government has resorted to slaughtering elephants to feed thousands of hungry soldiers. According to reports, soldiers have been eating elephant meat for more than a week.
