Tribunal offers no protection

ONE of the 77 Zimbabwean farmers who obtained a ruling from the SADC tribunal to stop the Zimbabwean government form seizing their farms, had his farm invaded over the weekend.

Several of the farmworkers who tried to stop the invaders were beaten up and some of them were taken to jail for resisting the invaders, according to Ben Freeth.Freeth, the son-in-law of Michael Campbell of Mount Carmel Farm, who took the matter to the Windhoek-based SADC Tribunal, told The Namibian that his in-laws were chased from the farmhouse on Saturday and were only allowed to return to fetch some clothes and their cat that was left abandoned in the Saturday turmoil.’The invaders put up a roadblock and are now camping out on the farm, led by one man who calls himself ‘Landmine’,’ Freeth said. ‘We find it difficult to understand that despite the ruling of the SADC Tribunal last December, that no farm invasions should take place on our farm and on those of the other 76 farmers, this invasion has now taken place.’ No reaction could be obtained from the Tribunal office earlier this week.
