TransNamib’s Haimbili lets off steam

TRANSNAMIB would like its trains to arrive on time, but the trains can’t ‘travel if the machines are lying on the ground’, the parastatal’s Chief Executive Officer, Titus Haimbili, said yesterday.

Haimbili responded to the state-owned enterprise (SOE) coming under fire at the 11th Annual Symposium of the Bank of Namibia, focusing on privatisation.’It is a dual responsibility between the operator and the owner,’ Haimbili passed the buck to Government. It will cost billions to refurbish the railways and provide the necessary tracks, he said. The CEO bemoaned TransNamib’s financial predicament, calling for preferential interest rates to borrow money from commercial banks.’How can we lower our tariffs if we have to repay loans at commercial rates?’ Haimbili wanted to know.TransNamib can only provide service if it has access to preferential loans, he said.’Patriotism is the basis of success,’ Haimbili said.In this regard he also challenged the local electronic and printed media to ‘partner’ with TransNamib and ‘look positively at issues’.jo-mare@namibian.com.na
