Defence Minister Charles Namoloh said that the country’s national roads should not be turned into ‘graveyards’.
Speaking in the National Assembly on Monday, Namoloh denounced the erection of crosses and other symbols at spots along the national roads where fatal road accidents occurred. Many people are erecting crosses at places where road deaths occurred as a sign of remembrance, or to remind other road users of the dangers posed by the roads and the need for obeying traffic signs.Namoloh called on the Minister of Works and Transport, Helmut Angula, to look into the matter and to ensure that the practice was stopped immediately.Namoloh was speaking during the discussion of the budget allocation of the Department of Transport in the 2009/10 National Budget. In response, Angula said the issue would definitely be addressed in planned amendments to traffic laws.He said some of these ‘tombstones’ were in fact erected in road reserves in violation of existing laws. – Nampa
