LONDON – Grime singer Tinchy Stryder has gone straight to the top of the charts with his aptly named single ‘Number 1’, the Official UK Charts Company said on Sunday.
The Ghanaian-born singer, based in east London, has been tipped as a rising star by MTV, Radio 1 and The Guardian.
Rewind Magazine called him the ‘Prince of Grime’, referring to the music that combines UK garage, dancehall and hip hop.
La Roux remained at number two with ‘In for the Kill’ while Scottish singer-songwriter Calvin Harris dropped from number one to three with ‘I’m not Alone’.
There was little change at the top of the albums chart where Lady Gaga’s ‘The Fame’ held on to number one.
The Essex electronic music band Depeche Mode, formed in 1980, was a new entrant at number two with ‘Sounds of the Universe’, while American R&B singer-songwriter Beyonce moved up from seven to three with ‘I am Sasha Fierce’.
