MEMBER of Parliament Hansina Christiaans has urged teachers to promote indigenous languages in school.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony of 21 in-service teachers, Christiaans said primary-school children must have the opportunity to develop numeric, reading and writing skills in their home languages. “If any language is neglected, so will its culture die out, since language is a carrier of culture,” she warned.Deputy Director of the Namibian Institute for Educational Development (NIED), Willy January, encouraged the graduates to take their profession seriously.”A teacher must be competent, hardworking and dedicated,” he said.The 21 teachers from various schools in the Karas and Hardap regions graduated after completing a four-year Basic Education Teaching Diploma (BETD).”If any language is neglected, so will its culture die out, since language is a carrier of culture,” she warned.Deputy Director of the Namibian Institute for Educational Development (NIED), Willy January, encouraged the graduates to take their profession seriously.”A teacher must be competent, hardworking and dedicated,” he said.The 21 teachers from various schools in the Karas and Hardap regions graduated after completing a four-year Basic Education Teaching Diploma (BETD).
