A SCHOOLTEACHER accused of rape and impregnating a minor pupil at the Leevi Hakusembe Secondary School near Rundu reported for duty on Monday despite a pending disciplinary hearing and court case.
The Police’s Woman and Child Protection Unit opened a statutory rape case against Andreas Mundumbu in October last year after he allegedly impregnated a pupil at that school. He had allegedly been having an affair with the Grade 8 pupil at the school since February last year, and was the fourth teacher in the Kavango Region to be charged with having sexual relations with a pupil.School principal Alexander Kudumo confirmed to Nampa on Monday that Mundumbu reported for work that morning after he was instructed by the regional education authority to do so. No disciplinary hearing has yet been held.Efforts to obtain comment from the region’s education director, Alfons Dikuua, proved futile as he was still on leave, while his deputy Fanuel Kapapero was attending a meeting in Windhoek. Bunya Circuit Inspector Keith Sanzila, under which the school falls, could also not be reached for comment as he was visiting schools.Mundumbu, who faces charges of committing a sexual act with a child under the age of 15 under the Combating of Immoral Practices Act, is expected to make his second court appearance on February 1.He is out on bail of N$2 000.The pupil, who turned 16 in June last year, is now seven months pregnant and has been registered for Grade 9 this academic year. She will only leave school four weeks before she delivers her baby, in terms of the new education policy. – Nampa
