SOUTH African singer and Unicef Goodwill Ambassador Yvonne Chaka Chaka says she is overwhelmed by the three-country immunisation drive against polio.
She was speaking at the launch of the synchronised cross-border campaign at Helao Nafidi. “Every mother wants to do everything possible to protect her children from illness and death, yet in Africa, so many of our children are still dying from illnesses that are so easily preventable.”She said immunisation is one of the easiest ways to make sure that all children under five years survive and develop. Each year, 1,7 million children die from diseases that could have been prevented with readily available vaccines and treatments, she said.Chaka Chaka said in Namibia, about 60 out of every 1 000 children die before the age of five. The situation is worse in Angola: 200 of every 1 000 children don’t survive until their fifth birthday.”Every mother wants to do everything possible to protect her children from illness and death, yet in Africa, so many of our children are still dying from illnesses that are so easily preventable.”She said immunisation is one of the easiest ways to make sure that all children under five years survive and develop. Each year, 1,7 million children die from diseases that could have been prevented with readily available vaccines and treatments, she said.Chaka Chaka said in Namibia, about 60 out of every 1 000 children die before the age of five. The situation is worse in Angola: 200 of every 1 000 children don’t survive until their fifth birthday.
