Tackling child marriages with AMVCA nominated film ‘Kukuri’

IN an effort to celebrate the 2020 Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA) nominated film ‘Kukuri’, MultiChoice Namibia hosted the first screening in Windhoek on Thursday, 13 February.

The event, which saw a variety of media and stakeholders in attendance, provided a platform for director Philippe Talavera and members of the cast and crew to share their experiences of filming.

On 7 February, it was announced that ‘Kukuri’ was nominated in the best movie Southern Africa category at the AMVCAs – the only Namibian film to do so this year.

Produced by Ombetja Yehinga Organisation (OYO) Trust, the film highlights the issue of child marriages in Namibia. It was shot on location in the Kavango and Zambezi regions and stars Hanty Kashongo, George Antonio, Mbango Munyima, Renah Xuexom, Nangana Mushavanga, Diyanna Longwani, Christiaan Haingura Njamba and Rozalina Wanga.

The 48-minute long film was initially showcased to audiences from the Kavango and Zambezi regions, says Talavera.

“The sad thing about this child marriage story is that girls become mothers at an early age while they should be in schools. We need to take action so this will stop happening. OYO for many years now has been talking about child marriages, but we need more voices because we can’t do it alone. We need more projects, because when one fails there are others,” Talavera said.

‘Kukuri’ will be screened for free at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre in Windhoek this Thursday at 18h00.

Talavera encourages members of the public to vote for ‘Kukuri’ to win the AMVCA award by registering on africamagic.dstv.com

Voting closes at midnight on 7 March.
