JOHANNESBURG – The number of confirmed swine flu cases in South Africa has reached 103, health authorities said yesterday, warning that the disease has spread across the country.
‘It is now clear that the pandemic virus has now been established throughout the country,’ the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said in a statement.’Although all cases to date had been detected in incoming travellers or in their immediate contacts, it is highly likely that community transmission will soon occur,’ the institute added.South Africa’s first swine flu case of A(H1N1) virus was recorded on June 14.This week the NICD said it would stop testing mild flu cases and focus on monitoring and treating moderate and severe cases as well as high-risk groups, such as those with HIV or chronic respiratory illnesses.Neighbouring Botswana on Wednesday reported two confirmed cases of swine flu, according to that country’s health ministry. – Nampa-AFP
