Swapo slams mystery members’ ‘list’

SWAPO on Friday condemned the distribution of a fake list of supposed top members of the new party Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP).

The ruling party’s Deputy Secretary General, John Pandeni, described the origin of list as “mysterious” and said it was “unfairly” linking some of the ruling party’s members to the RDP. Thus, he said, Swapo condemned the list, which was circulated without the official letterhead of any political party. The list is said to have “damaged: the reputation of several key Swapo members, including some Cabinet Ministers, former Ministers and chief executives of parastatals. It is headed by Swapo founder member Andimba Toivo ya Toivo, with Helmut Angula as number two and Hidipo Hamutenya third on the list. Both Toivo and Angula have distanced themselves from the list.Angula said last week that the list was distributed to sow division among Swapo members.RDP interim chairman Jesaya Nyamu last week claimed that the list was produced by Swapo, as the party’s Youth League and some branches called on those on it to distance themselves from RDP.”It is clear that the objective of this mysterious list is to cause confusion amongst the rank and file as well as potentially to sow seeds of division in the Swapo Party. It is for that reason that the list includes the combination of names of those who have defected from Swapo Party and those still in the Swapo Party,” Pandeni said.He said party members needed to exercise maximum vigilance against the manoeuvres of disgruntled elements who want to cause confusion in Swapo. It took Swapo more than two weeks to react to the list. The Youth League had earlier called on all people on the list of 20 to come out publicly and deny their links to RDP – something that was seen as very disrespectful to tested cadres of the party such as Toivo and Angula. At Friday’s media briefing, Pandeni also confirmed that arrangements for the Swapo congress, scheduled for November 27 to 30, were continuing. The Central Committee will meet on November 26 to finalise the congress programme and confirm the candidates for the top four positions.Although the Politburo announced that President Hifikepunye Pohamba (President) and Geingob (Vice President) would be unopposed, it gave three names for the Secretary General position and two for that of the Deputy.Incumbent Ngarikutuke Tjiriange, Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana and Local Government Minister John Pandeni will fight it out for the position of Secretary General while Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is up against Education Minister Nangolo Mbumba for Deputy Secretary General of Swapo.”The Politburo identified the preferred candidates. It is for the Central Committee to either adopt, reject or add to the list,” Tjiriange said earlier. He added that any delegate to the party’s upcoming congress also had the right to nominate someone from the floor.”They are not under any obligation to accept the names as they are,” he emphasised. On Thursday, the Swapo Youth League called on the Central Committee to “further infuse guidance and streamline the candidates, in keeping with the Swapo Party dynamism”.They want only four names provided to the congress.”We, as the youth, value all of our true leaders, and have no doubt that even for those that do not make portfolio positions, they will remain steadfast and available to the cause,” the Youth League said. They call the cutting of candidates to four “guided democracy”.Thus, he said, Swapo condemned the list, which was circulated without the official letterhead of any political party.
