Suicide after car accident

A 38-year-old man committed suicide after a hit-and-run accident in which a five-year-old boy was badly injured in Keetmanshoop’s Tseiblaagte residential area on Sunday afternoon.

Deputy Commissioner Josephat Abel of the Karas Police said people on their way to work yesterday morning found the man hanging from a tree in the veld not far from where the accident took place. Abel identified the deceased as Abisai Jason. According to Abel, Jason told a relative in a telephonic conversation just minutes before killing himself that he preferred to die instead of going to jail. The car struck the boy while he was marching in the streets of Tseiblaagte together with Swapo supporters to mark the 49th anniversary of the Swapo Party. The car sped off after the accident. The boy, Abisai Frans, is recovering in the Keetmanshoop State Hospital.Dr Lidis Aquilar said he had sustained head injuries but his condition was stable and he had no bone fractures. ‘The boy was unconscious for few hours, but when he regained consciousness he responded well to questions medical staff asked him,’ she said.
