Suburbs pounce on Jaguars

WESTERN Suburbs were far too strong for Jaguars as they recorded a 65-3 victory in their MTC Premier League rugby match at the HTS field on Saturday.

Suburbs ran in a total of 11 tries to claim a maximum six points and join United at the top of the Premier League log with 33 points. United however have a game in hand.
Suburbs were just too strong for Jaguars and dominated all facets of the game.
Their pack overpowered Jaguars in the scrums, pushing them back with ease, while Wacca Kazombiaze and Angelo Klaasen dominated the lineouts.
The loose trio of Vaughn Pietersen, Rodriguez Victor and especially eighthman Brandon Walters dominated the loose play, while Walters and prop Hauta Veii caught the eye with some rampaging runs.
With their surfeit of possession, Suburbs’ backs ran riot, scoring most of the tries.
Flyhalf Eugene Jantjies gave a quick service to his backline, while centre Darryl de la Harpe made some telling breaks.
It was however their national wings McGrath van Wyk and Llewellyn Winckler and fullback Justin Nel who did most of the damage.
Rightwing McGrath van Wyk had a great game scoring a hat-trick of tries and three conversions for a personal haul of 21 points, before he left the field midway through the second half with an ankle injury. Van Wyk seemed to have scored his fourth try, diving over in the corner, after another flowing backline move, but the referee adjudicated that he was pushed into touch.
Van Wyk however injured his ankle in the process and had to be carried off the pitch, in great pain. Initial fears of serious injury were however dispelled after treatment and Suburbs’ manager Walter Donn expressed the hope that Van Wyk would be ready for next Saturday’s match against Wanderers.
Winckler also had a fine game, scoring a hat-trick of tries and a conversion for a haul of 17 points, while fullback Justin Nel scored two tries and one conversion for a tally of 12 points.
Suburbs’ other tries were scored by centre Darryl de la Harpe, eighthman Brandon Walters and flanker Rodrigues Victor.
Jaguars were clearly outclassed and could only reply with one penalty by flyhalf Andre Isacks. It was their ninth consecutive defeat in the Premier League, during which they have conceded a massive 563 points, while only scoring 74 points themselves.
In other matches on Saturday, Kudus scored a surprise 34-25 victory at home against Rehoboth. Rehoboth were lying second on the log before the game on 31 points, but have now moved down to third position.
In another upset, Reho Falcon suffered a 22-12 defeat to Unam on their home ground in Rehoboth. Reho Falcon, who won the Premier League in 2007, are struggling this season and are currently lying in mid-table, more than 10 points off the pace.
