Student heads to court over murder

A UNIVERSITY of Namibia student who is accused of murdering another student in a stabbing last week is set to make a first court appearance today.

The suspect is due to appear in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court today, a Police spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Silvanus Nghishidimbwa, said yesterday.He is expected to be charged with a count of murder.The suspect, identified by fellow students as a second-year law student, is accused of murdering a third-year economics student, Johannes Shapange (20), at a hostel at Unam’s Windhoek campus on Thursday morning.Shapange was stabbed to death in an incident which left students at the campus in a state of shock.Students at the scene told The Namibian on Thursday that the stabbing started in a shower. Shapange fled from the shower after being attacked, but the killer followed him and continued with the stabbing outside.Shapange was pronounced dead after he had been rushed to a hospital in the city.The suspect was arrested on Thursday morning. He had reportedly gone to an early-morning class after the fatal stabbing.Students also claimed that the suspect appeared to have been experiencing psychiatric problems. He had been telling fellow students that Shapange bewitched him, students claimed.
