Stronger, healthier, happier: Fitnessas self-care

AS the new year begins, many set resolutions to improve their lives, but for women juggling multiple responsibilities, prioritising fitness often takes a back seat.

However, fitness enthusiast and wellness advocate Sirka Hamutenya believes that exercise is a crucial aspect of self-care that can transform one’s life.

“Fitness is not just about looking good; it’s about feeling good, building confidence and creating a mindset that empowers you.
“When you take care of your body, you’re also taking care of your mental and emotional well-being,” Hamutenya says.

MORE THAN JUST EXERCISE
Hamutenya explains that fitness goes beyond lifting weights or running on a treadmill. It is about adopting a lifestyle that promotes balance, resilience and self-love.

“When women make time for movement – whether it’s a walk, yoga, or strength training – they’re not just working out, they’re investing in themselves,” she says.

She believes physical activity helps reduce stress and anxiety, making it an essential tool for maintaining mental health.

“For me, the gym is my happy place. It’s where I disconnect from life’s stress, focus on myself and come out feeling stronger – physically and mentally” Hamutenya says.

THE BENEFITS OF FITNESS
According to Hamutenya, regular exercise offers numerous benefits including:
Boosting confidence: Reaching fitness milestones instils a sense of accomplishment and self-belief.

Enhancing discipline: Sticking to a fitness routine builds habits that can improve time management, self-care and financial responsibility.
Promoting better health: Exercise strengthens the heart, improves immunity and reduces the risk of chronic illnesses.

Encouraging self-care: A fitness-focused lifestyle can lead to healthier eating habits, better sleep and improved overall well-being.

GETTING STARTED
For those who feel overwhelmed by the idea of starting a fitness journey, Hamutenya suggests taking small steps.

“You don’t have to spend hours in the gym to see results, Start with 10 minutes of movement a day. Find an activity you enjoy, be consistent and celebrate progress no matter how small,” she says.

She further encourages women to prioritise their well-being in 2025.

She adds that “Your health is an investment, not an expense.

Make time for yourself, because when you feel your best, you can give your best to everything else in your life.”
The journey to better self-care may not always be easy, but as Hamutenya puts it: “The best project you’ll ever work on is yourself”.
