AFRICAN Stars won the 2017/18 MTC Namibia Premier League title after a come-from-behind 2-1 victory against Tigers at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Sunday.
Going into the match Stars had a seven-point advantage over second-placed Black Africa with the result that a victory would ensure that they win the league with two matches to go.
Tigers, however, took the lead shortly before halftime when a cross into the box by Panduleni Nekundi was cleared to Gustav Isaak who slammed the ball into the net off the far post.
Their lead however didn’t last long as Stars equalised two minutes into the second half through a great free kick by Aubrey Amseb, who slammed the ball through the narrowest of margins past the wall and into the net.
Tigers suffered a big setback on 58 minutes when midfielder Esko Kavela was sent off after picking up a second yellow card and they had to play the last half hour with just 10 men.
Gaps started opening up as both sides started attacking and with five minutes to go, Amseb finally got the winner when he scored from a Nekundi cross.
The final whistle went shortly after to send Stars’ players, management and fans wild with delight, while NPL chairman Patrick Kauta and Tim Ekandjo of MTC handed the trophy to Stars’ captain Pat Nevin Uanivi.
Black Africa’s faint hopes of catching Stars came to an end as they drew 1-1 against Eleven Arrows in Walvis Bay.
The rest of Sunday’s results were as follows:
Citizens 1 Orlando Pirates 1, Mighty Gunners 2 Chief Santos 1, Blue Waters 1 Young African 2, Rundu Chiefs 1 Young Chiefs 1, Unam 0 Life Fighters 0, Tura Magic 1 Civics 1.
