AFRICAN Stars have the best chance to win the Namibia Premier League (NPL) title, provided they keep their first spot and win all their remaining four matches.
As things are, only a late title-snatch by either SKW or Civics can stop the ‘Samba Boys’ from painting the town red when the league ends next month.
Stars are now topping the league with a point ahead after their midweek 1-0 win over Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) who are in second, but have to win their remaining four matches which include the game in hand.
They can win the league easily if SKW drops six points in their last three games and if Civics lose once, but for safety’s sake, they should keep the first spot and win all their games to guarantee them the championship trophy.
Stars will blame themselves for not taking this title after they led the standings for most of the first round, while they will kick themselves for disappointing their fans who have been behind them in most of their matches. Stars are on 43 points from 18 matches, while SKW are on 42 from 19 matches, with Civics in third on 39 from 19 too.
Civics piled up the pressure on both Stars and SKW after they beat visiting Arrows 1-0 at the Independence Stadium on Saturday night.
Defending champions Orlando Pirates’ hopes of coming at least into the top four evaporated at the Ramblers Stadium, with a 2-1 loss to Ramblers, who at the same time also eased their relegation woes.
Ramblers are now in eight spot with 20 points from 19 matches, while Pirates sit in sixth spot, but jointly on 32 points with Arrows who are in fifth spot. Black Africa celebrated a 1-0 victory over Hotspurs in Windhoek on Friday night, a result that has now put them in fourth spot and on 38 points from 19 matches.
One-all draws by Chief Santos and Mighty Gunners against Tigers and Oshakati City respectively will not see them back into the premiership next season.
