Spain assists Namibia with ocean research

THE Spanish oceanographic research vessel ‘Vizconde de Eza’ that docked at the port of Walvis Bay recently, will be in Namibian waters to carry out a joint Spanish-Namibian scientific campaign.

The boat, owned by the Spanish Ministry of Environment and Rural and Seaside Areas, has six specialized laboratories onboard (chemistry, biology, physics, humidity, and information technology), as well as a dynamic positioning system that allows the vessel to remain on the same spot without varying her position regardless of currents, winds or waves. A team of Namibian and Spanish experts in marine geology, fisheries and marine biology, headed by Roberto Sarralde, from the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, will be onboard the ‘Vizconde de Eza’ to carry out a multi-disciplinary survey on the Walvis Bay Ridge seamounts, as an experimental study to localize and identify vulnerable ecosystems associated with seamounts that could interact with fishing gear. The campaign is expected to end on 28 February. This will be the 6th mission that the ‘Vizconde de Eza’ will carry out in Namibia.
