SOME 163 South African government officials will be arrested today on charges of defrauding social grant schemes, the Department of Social Development said in a statement.
Most accused will face charges of abusing the child support grant system. The arrests would be made by members of the Special Investigating Unit, the Directorate of Special Operations (Scorpions) and the Commercial Branch of the South African Police Services.The statement added: “Nationally there are approximately 41 000 public servants who are being investigated with regard to fraud and corruption as part of the initial phase of the joint operation focusing on government officials who are or have been unlawfully receiving grants.”Following a swoop on Tuesday last week, 21 officials would appear in court in Mpumalanga, 85 in KwaZulu-Natal and 57 in North-West.Officials in other provinces are also being investigated.- Nampa-SapaThe arrests would be made by members of the Special Investigating Unit, the Directorate of Special Operations (Scorpions) and the Commercial Branch of the South African Police Services.
