SMS Of The Day
*WHY do food retailers let their food items expire? Is it not possible for them give food items that are about to expire to the needy as part of their social responsibility rather than waiting for them to expire and dump it where they will end up being consumed anyway?

Food for Thought*WHY do houses in Windhoek crack so badly, even townhouses in posh complexes. Is it the builders, the cement or the architects? Bouquets and Brickbats*VERY good campaign Cancer Association. Rundu also needs a pap smear campaign.*EVERY year Western countries donate millions of dollars in aid to Namibia. In fact a country like the USA spent billions in aid to Africa including Namibia. Question: Are there jobless, poor people living on the streets and eating out of garbage dumps in the USA? The answer is YES. The problem with us Namibians is that we are willing to be helped but when the Government gives a helping hand to a needy nation like Somalia, where hundreds of children are dying, we complain. We should remember that just because we don’t face big catastrophes like other nations, Namibia is immune to it. So well done to MTC and Red Cross for your initiative.
*NAMIBIANS are heartless! How can people compare a few Namibians eating from dustbins to a nation that is greatly suffering. Show me anyone in this country who is so hungry that their flesh literally sticks to their bones, or a mother who carries a dead child on her back for hours just to later realise that the child has died. Show me anyone in Nam who walks for hundreds of kms for food. Please be reasonable. The Somalia SMS is asking only 5 dollars and is optional.*DEAR editor please make Jean Sutherland write more! She had our whole office in stitches over the Kenyan marathon runners. Please.Politics*GOVT bankrolls Swapo events? No wonder it is called a ‘Swapo Party Government’ instead of the Government of the Republic of Namibia (GRN). The Government policies are replaced by the Swapo Party Manifesto. The Government has just been corrupted. *IT is the height of arrogance of power and political sophistry for the Prime Minister to insist that ‘there is nothing wrong with Government briefing Swapo’. Prime Minister: that attitude is called abuse of power, pure and simple. Parliament allocates huge amounts to political parties in proportion to their seats precisely to carry out party activities. And the subsidy is not even accounted for . No wonder that when ruling parties, that abused power in office, have their assets acquired with government resources seized when opposition parties win or the revolution takes place, whichever comes first.*WHY on earth should a birthday party be compared to what Abraham Iyambo does? Please leave him alone. He is one of the few Ministers who have the nation at heart.Wal-MartHerbert Jauch*THANKS a million to Herbert Jauch for a well-researched and comprehensive article on the Wal-Mart take over. Those prospective employees will have an better understanding before they leave their current jobs and join companies like WalMart. Keep on informing the nation.Salute!- Aubasen *I VOTE NO to Wal-Mart, it will not benefit Namibians at all. Don’t be fooled by a few cheap items. It is a smoke screen and Walmart will not uplift our economy. It will not create jobs and it will not improve our communities. *FOR every person Wal-Mart employs, they displace 1.5 full-time workers in the local job market according to evidence from other countries where Wal-Mart took over. Hence, workers are subjected to unfair and low paid jobs and on top of that 50% more people will lose their jobs, since local businesses will be ‘outcompeted’! Is that the local economic development and job creation we talk about?- CDHorn of Africa*REPLY to Jutta’s SMS: At least our Namibian people are eating at the dump site. Eating! And by choice for that matter. Somalians have no dump sites to eat from, or anything to eat anywhere. Due to war, not by choice. These are African people, our people! This is our house and only we, as occupants, can cleanse it. I shed a tear from a deep pain within.- Jurgen
*GOVERNMENT please give my back pay money so I can support my family, and then Somalia, otherwise more Namibians will go and live at the rubbish dump. What is wrong in this country? Please change.- Shamuyarira, Oshikuku Education*THREE primary school children in Katutura allegedly swore at their teacher. Their parents – one a domestic worker – were fined N$100 each as payment to the teacher. Is this standard practice?*HOW are we as Namibians going to contribute successfully towards achieving Vision 2030 and beyond if tertiary institutions are unaffordable for most Namibians and our Government is doing very little to assist the poor who want to better themselves?- Berti*I HUMBLY request the Director of Education and their education inspectors for Gobabis district to deliver service to the Epako JS School, because that school’s walls are very dirty and it needs to be renovated too!- Cde E.Shuundeni Touring! *UNAM, Poly why is a math test compulsory even if the course I’m taking has no math at all? Law and Order*WE know the law is the law but is the life of a human being not above the law? In response to the article, The Namibian, August 10, page 5. The Somalis are starving in their own country, why send them back instead of sending them to a refuge camp. Or is Osire refugee camp closed down? *POLICE houses in Okuryangava and Otjomuise are very dirty and have been vandalised. An inspection and clean-up campaign must be put in place by the police. Counting Heads*WHEN will the names and venues for supervisory enumerators for the census be out for Otjozondjupa? The training starts next week.Health Matters*MINISTRY of Health please do something at Khomasdal Clinic it’s pathetic how some nurses treat their patients, no respect! When will change come?Old Soldiers*WHEN is the next registration for the veterans of the liberation struggle? Some of us could not get registered due to the long queues and had to return back home to wait for the next call up? City Fathers Please…*WE are at Aroab Street, Havana No 2 and have a problem with a broken manhole. The smell is bad. Please Municipality do somethingIn and From the Regions*OGONGO Constituency councillor when are we getting toilets at our homes like other constituencies do?*WE need a development at Omuthitu in Ogongo Constituency. We are far behind. *DEAR Roads Authority do something about the road between Otavi and Tsumeb and Otjiwarongo to Okahandja. Service Please*AT one or other time we all lose, misplace or forget a (post box) key or two – this is human. Now why should we pay N$10 at the Swakopmund post office every time we ask for normal mail over the counter, especially when we already pay exorbitant yearly box rental fees? Is this fair?*GIPF Oshakati put a secretary or receptionist for enquiries at the entrance instead of a security guard who cannot help us at all. Sometimes it is just a matter of asking but you end up queuing for hours as if you have a major question. Thanks.*PLEASE MTC we need network coverage at Onkani and Onkaanka. There are a lot of people there but they can only use their cellphones when they come to Oshakati which is 78 km away. Please help!*ONE Africa TV we also need your service in Kalkfeld please. Please Help*FELLOW ex students from Petrus !Ganeb. Let us establish a fund to raise finances for the renovation of our school. Kindly note that former students at Okakarara did the same. Petrus !Ganeb School produced many high-ranking cadres amongst others Judge Peter Damaseb. We must start now for the sake of the Namibian child.Responses to recent SMSes*I DO not understand why Namibians are eating in the dumpsite? Such people must be punished for eating expired food. This is not a hungry country. People should stand up and work. I can advise how to earn money for yourself.*I AGREE with the crack cocaine issue in Khomasdal. I am sure the DEA knows the addresses but nothing is done! Maybe the Walvis DEA must be transferred to Windhoek for alternative weekends! Please help crying families.*WITH regard to hitch hiking of learners of Cosmos, Eldorado and Acacia high schools. Is it not the parents responsibility to make sure that their children get home safely? *WHAT is the parents’ responsibility if principals have to take learners safely home, feed them and sit them down for homework. – Confused citizen!!CORRECTIONThe contribution by Citizen Angula will appear on Tuesday, August 16.
