SMS Of The Day
n READERS’ letters: K T Shitumbapo and A Shejavali are right. As long as we can read and discuss these matters; not everything is lost. Keep going; please!
Food for Thought*I TRAVELLED North during this long weekend and was surprised at how many green number plated vehicles passed me (doing 120) at great speed! A Ministry of Environment and Tourism Cruiser 4.5 loaded with beer seemed to be running close to the factory speed limit. I assume that it was standard and must therefore consume about 30 litres/100 km with my tax money. Since these drivers do not seem to be deterred by speed traps or roadblocks, as they are passing the waiting row of vehicles on the left, can’t one just limit the top speed of these vehicles? This should cost about N$2 000 per car and would ease the burden on the State coffers considerably. We have done so on plenty of company cars with an irritating buzzer going off 7 kph or so before the engine gets cut until a sane speed prevails again. Safe driving and I hope none of these speedsters cause an accident.- Nick Bouquets and Brickbats*I WOULD like to salute our president Comrade Hifikepunye Pohamba and the Government for the excellent idea of wanting to get rid of all illegal gambling in our lovely country. Legal and illegal gambling is not a business but a social evil. I’m sure 90 per cent of Namibians support this idea.*’TIME To Set The People Free’. Thanks Dr Abisai Shejavali for your article in The Namibian of December 17, page 16. I fully agree with you that Namibia will be a second Zimbabwe soon under the current regime. We need a change.*THANK you Alexactus T Kaure for bringing up the Caprivi dilemma once more. It sure remains a dark cloud on Namibia’s justice system. There can only be a political solution which is not brought about by incarcerating people.- Waltraut*CONGRATULATIONS to a detective Sergeant of the Namibian Police named Freddy. You are a hard-working policeman. We thank you for arresting a man who has been robbing us pretending to be a sewing machine mechanic. Keep it up Comrade Freddy!*COMRADE (Kazenambo) Kazenambo you are a hero. You are the only politician in Namibia with an independent mind, fearless and not a hypocrite. Thank you for speaking on behalf of the voiceless and those who are ignorant. If you have to be victimised; be strong, stand your ground and stick to your guns.*PLAYHOUSE get your act together. The show on December 18 was a shambles.- Edwina*A NAMIBIAN Weekender without The Rambler? Terrible! And no TV programme included? Something wrong?*CAN The Namibian newspaper journalists please interview more artists for the Weekender such as D-jay, Lil D, KK, Kanibal etc. Thank you.Note: The Weekender had its final edition for the year on Friday. But we are sure our colleagues will consider your request in the New Year.- News Desk*THE Namibian please stop publishing wrong news to the public! Man U vs Chelsea game is not on Saturday but on Sunday 18h00! Now people are debating and fighting!- Kuku City Fathers Please*IT is 16h25 on Saturday. There is no answer at the Windhoek Municipality tel. 061- 290-2452 to answer power outage queries in Klein Windhoek.Gambling*LAWMAKERS know only that gambling licences create income for the operators, players, and happily, revenue to the State. But they consciously fail to know the devastating economic effects gambling causes to the “have-nots”, if not the haves. I propose a law on repealing gambling licences. 1. Gambling licences must be made restrictive to hotels/motels, casinos and resorts only. 2. Stiffer punishment must be imposed on anyone found operating gambling illegally in premises not specified above by law.- Economically and socially concerned citizen *IN response to the statement made to Thomas Indji in a weekly newspaper on Thursday. I am a black Namibian who am what I am today because of Bantu education: well behaved, with respect for myself and my fellow human beings; instilled to work hard both physically and mentally to reach your goal. Bantu education never prepared us to become overnight millionaires through illegal trades like gambling. Viva Bantu education. I regard myself lucky and privileged to be exposed to you.
*THE speech by the Namibian Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Northern Branch is not correct to blame the Bantu education system for their demise and may be an excuse so they can be allowed to run illegal businesses such as gambling. The truth is that people who are at the helm of this country, whether public or private institutions, are products of same education system Mr Thomas Indji is blaming. You should say thank you to Swapo’s Government for allowing you to do illicit lucrative business without paying tax to the Treasury. Stop this nonsense. You Dr (Elijah) Ngurare stop that frivolous attitude of yours. Rather concentrate on youth development. Remember what you promised the people of DRC informal settlement. *JACKPOT operators have reminded Government about how they transported people to Swapo rallies free of charge. During the meeting, Government and Swapo seemed to be compromising. We must be careful not to make Namibia a banana state. Gambling is an anti-social business.WikiLeaksJulian Assange*JULIAN Assange, Editor of Wikileaks, is my kind of international freedom fighter like Che Guevara or Nelson Mandela. Let’s hear the alleged sexual assault charges. No wonder the British judge rejected the (rightwing) Swedish’s opposition to bail. The Government is denying the [alleged] wholesale resettlement of 5 000 Chinese after failing to pay a loan; but the evidence is all over Namibia for all to see; mainly in Windhoek or Oshikango.*THE Government [allegedly] allowing 5 000 Chinese families to settle and take the jobs and opportunities from Namibians is tantamount to treason against our people! And yes; most people find the claims of Wikileaks more believable than the denials of the Government. Let the truth out!- Theo*SOME voters express regret for not knowing about the alleged deals between Government and China before the elections. Well why wait for something to happen before we realise that we are not supposed to give 67 per cent of power to one party (not even one with a good reputation), because anybody can be tempted to do something, such as what is being alleged, when there is nobody else around to keep watch. So we should stop voting for a party and start voting for Namibia Politics*SINCE 1993-4 the opposition parties received advice to form a coalition in order to win more seats, constituencies etc. Ever since they ignored that advice. Now (again) they say; ‘We should have cooperated.’ Let’s hope they plan now.In and From the Regions*GOVERNOR Clinton Swartbooi why not start with a Karas Trade Festival to expose our region more to investors and businesspeople. They can come for us, the entrepreneurs, to market our region. Karas has a lot of opportunities as we are richest region in natural resources. We have a lot to offer.- Youth Entrepreneur, Karas *THERE is a man walking around in Okahandja after 20h00 claiming to be from the Ministry of Health and Social Services apparently informing people about diseases and sickness. He does not have any identification and claims to have lost it. Do not allow him into your homes and better lock your yards so that he or they don’t gain entrance. *I WONDER who is bringing dagga to Rehoboth. First it was knives that were killing people and now it’s dagga. What is going on in Rehoboth lately? *CAN the owners of KFC, Mr Price and Fashion World team up and challenge the Chinese for violation of copyrights laws? We are tired of them copying us and invading our territories here in the northern part of Namibia! Health Matters*THE Minister of Health should tell the nation why nurses do not take care of patients anymore. Nurses nowadays only give medication and sunbathe! People who were never trained to bathe a patient are doing it; feed and turn them when tired of sleeping on one side. I want to know what would happen if accidents happen while relatives do any of those services? When were those responsibilities taken away from nurses? If these are now the responsibilities of relatives at State hospitals; then proper accommodation should be provided for them! These people sleep like animals! Mosquitoes feed on them all night long, thus the high rates of malaria! While the Minister is on tour of his hospitals he should see how these relatives sleep, talk to them and find out what they do for their loved ones. Imagine a man bathing and changing his mother for a month while trained nurses just marvel and praise him! Do something.
The caring profession*ONANDJOKWE Lutheran Hospital ward 10. Night-shift nurses should treat patients with respect. We did not ask to get sick. We are paying huge amounts of money to our medical aid that pays your salary. Just be a little nicer?
Education*I REQUEST the Minister of Education Abraham Iyambo to visit Omagalanga Combined School to see how old the classrooms are.*DR Abraham Iyambo, do you know that there is a school in Oshikoto Region built with grass? Labour Issues*ELECTORAL Commission of Namibia we finished your job, when are we receiving our pay? Law and Order*IS there any Namibian law at Wanaheda Police Station? Why are Police beating people before they take them to cells? Please Government do something before they beat people to death.*PS (of Justice) please help. It has become a struggle to get our children’s maintenance money at Tsumeb. Witness fees are being prioritised now while our children are suffering from hunger and that while the fathers have deposited the money in! To whom should we turn to now?NBC*DEAR NBC please repeat the ‘Beats Per Minute’ of Friday, December 17. Thank you.*IS it ‘Timeless’ we are watching? No sound or Al Jazeera news. What’s going on, NBC people? What’s wrong with the media? n FIRST the Chinese took over our jobs, businesses and economy. On Friday night the they took over the whole 20h00 news bulletin on NBC TV and replaced it with their own CCTV news.- Tate Mahangu*DO we really need CCtv news? I never saw a Namibian event feature on it. *I WOULD like to complain about NBC’s poor service over the past few days. NBC I really think you should change the type of service offered to us especially during ‘Timeless’ and the news. How would we know what’s going on in Namibia? I paid my TV licence and this is what I get! And you don’t even send out an apology.*NBC your service is becoming more pathetic by the day. You offer no apologies for poor sound and visual quality. So disappointed.*SHAME on NBC TV for giving us news without audio and then switching over to CCTV and Deutsche Welle while we are expecting Namibian news. It was a disgrace; we are disappointed.
Service Please*HOME Affairs office is a total mess. Some like myself applied for passports in August and still I haven’t received mine. Then there are some officers, such as a certain Mr Amos, walking around screaming ‘do you know who I am?’ to people wanting to stress their concerns. Will someone please enlighten this man about his identity. Holiday plans are being cancelled which is the exact dilemma that some wanted to avoid by applying early.- Concerned citizen*CAN someone from Home Affairs please tell me how I should apply for a duplicate ID because I lost mine and don’t have any form of identification. *I DO not know why Game employs a workforce who stand around and talk instead of assisting customers. We need change. I deserve value for my hard-earned cash. *PLEASE can Base FM notify us before making changes in their schedules. Waited for one of the best shows on radio ‘The Reggae Explosion’ with the Crucially Crucial Selector on Tuesday night but it never came on and no explanation was offered.*WHAT can I do if I want to listen to the English news directly from my cellphone?*DEAR NATIS, you need more offices in Windhoek. And much more ‘green’ than shooting our big cats for trophies. *THE idea of a 6-month ARV is impossible. And (if it were possible ) what if you got serious side-effects ?
