SMS Of The Day
CAN our Parliament not talk about or table things affecting us daily instead of just debating unnecessary views.
SMS Of The Day
CAN our Parliament not talk about or table things affecting us daily instead of just debating unnecessary views. Is that what they are paid for?
– Ipinge Sierra
Food for Thought
MP (Arnold) Tjihuiko, allowing smoking zones in restaurants is like allowing peeing zones in swimming pools?
– Pombili
IF I had a helicopter I would chase away the seals before those so called harvesters cull them!
Bouquets and Brickbats
GOD bless the sponsor of Robbie. He doesn’t look at status.
I REALLY am becoming proud of the NBC. One, for the Fifa live broadcasts and two, for the new initiatives to pay TV licences. NBC deserves the nation’s support. So let’s give it! Keep it up NBC!
WE see porn every day on our TV screens, music videos with very young girls doing their thing. I am yet to hear someone complain about it. Shame!
CAN (Richard) Metcalfe please say something. Public apology, defence or anything. We want to see reactions after our reaction. I tried to be as neutral as possible.
I’M confused fellow humans! The Metcalfe advert showed a woman in a bikini so she wasn’t naked. If she was naked then why do woman wear their bikini’s at the beach?
– Afrikan comrade
USING a half-naked woman to sell your product or service is not particularly clever as one person wrote in defence of the Metcalfe ad. It is instead a rather uncreative and unoriginal way to catch attention – countless car and men’s magazines as well as prostitutes employ the same method. The ad is simply more of the same.
THE ad is not offensive. Look the way ladies are dressing today. They are sometimes half naked. Artists are dancing in public like that too. Give them a chance to be respected. It’s only a myth to believe that the ad is promoting GBV.
SHAME on you Minister Tjekero Tweya for openly stating on TV seals are useless. God made seals as He made you! Shame on you. May God forgive you.
Ndeshi & Jakes cartoon of 08 July 2010: Please stop this type of cartoon! The ‘picture’ and language is not fitting for a family paper!
A CONVERSATION with friends about The Namibian not posting SMSEs they send in. Solution: forget The Namibian, use Facebook where your message is guaranteed to appear. I bet you won’t post this one!
Note: It is not possible to publish all messages received and we try to give a fair representation of views and topics people are writing about. We do our best to use a wide selection but some messages are badly written, even incomprehensible, others defamatory. Please note also that this page is a service to our readers. Through Facebook you reach your friends; through this page you reach the nation! It’s your choice. – News Desk
I FIND it shocking that The Namibian has resorted to snooping on people’s Facebook profiles for front page stories. I have seen two in the past two weeks. You are devaluing your journalists and might risk becoming a tabloid if you continue like that.
Note: It’s not a case of snooping. Facebook is a semi-public forum. The Namibian has already drawn up preliminary guidelines on the potential use of information involving new social media, if a situation arises. In the case of the front-page story on the debate in Swapo, The Namibian was invited to report on the issue, which actually used an article from the newspaper as the jumping-off point. We do not randomly scour Facebook for tidbits. – News Desk
Woza 2010
THE octopus has spoken and saved itself from a Spanish paella!
MY condolences to the Germans. Viva Espanol!
TO my fellow few Dutch supporters, congrats on reaching the final. We reached the impossible dream.
– Oom P
THE real Hand of God intervened in the World Cup to stop Uruguay from progressing (and cheating) any further. Shame on Suarez.
I WILL rest my World Cup case! The first ever World Cup on African soil. The vuvuzela was too noisy, then the host was out; followed by the defending champions and runner up. Fifa says sorry for the first time for referees messing up in football. African teams all out except Ghana. Ghana makes history by denying themselves a place in the semis. Uruguay claims saved by the true hand of God. No previous winner in the finals and so the list goes on. We have made sure that the World Cup history is re-written in Africa also by not winning it. Anyway good luck to the finalists.
The BIG Picture
WHAT’S the difference between BIG and the Swapo government severance package to ex-combatants and war veterans? Both are creating dependency regards income. The National Union of Namibian Workers must just come out and tell the true reason behind its withdrawal from the BIG campaign. Stop with the double standards.
KARONDA and co alike, we the independent-minded workforce from the South support the BIG issue. We pay your salaries so start dancing to our tune.
– Zoro.
IT is pure selfishness that the NUNW has cut its ties with the BIG citing that they would rather support projects creating wealth. In our country these projects (creating wealth) only benefit the elite and their political allies. That’s how our so-called leaders are – they just don’t mind you if you are poor.
– Stephanus, Walvis Bay
THE leaders at the NUNW must get their morals straight. Withdrawing from the BIG campaign is a betrayal of the working class and the toiling poor.
– Belly politics.
SHAME on the NUNW leadership! Did they consult their members before leaving the BIG coalition? The NUNW has abandoned the poor and discredited itself!
A Rose by Any Other Name
PLEASE Father of the Nation and the entire nation consider that Gloudina Street must be renamed after Dr Kenneth Kaunda. Without his helping hand in the liberation struggle of Namibia, we wouldn’t have been proud Namibians.
JACKSON Kaujeua should be the name given to Gloudina Street. His work is evident even to the born-frees. Mayor think and make a right decision.
TO all those tasked with the responsibility of naming and re-naming our streets; please keep names as short as possible. Ideally a first name and surname only. Refrain from using long and unnecessary names. Thank you.
– Joseph, Windhoek
HAS the City of Windhoek no other problems than fighting over renaming streets? It just costs money, not only for them but also for the people and businesses. They have to change all their stationery! If the City of Windhoek wants to spend money do it on more important issues.
– Urshela
TO the Windhoek City’s street and place naming committee – don’t rename a street after Dr (Kenneth Kaunda) twice. Please consider the late Ithana. Namibia has honoured Dr Kaunda already.
HOW can the High Commissioner of a foreign country like Zambia come and demand a street name change here in Windhoek? Especially since Kaunda already has a street named after him. Clearly Katutura is just not considered good enough. What arrogance!
SENIOR Government and diplomat fight over re-naming a street? What a petty exercise! Hon Ithana please focus on the Ministry of Justice. The judiciary is overburdened.
Up in Smoke
NOT all restaurants are adhering to the new no smoking law. Who can we report them to?
Flying High
INCREASING the tourism levy to bail out Air Namibia is unrealistic. We are also feeling the crunch. Unions say something or we might have to retrench employees. Sell Air Namibia or outsource Air Namibia and save retrenchments.
Running the Show
UTONI Nujoma and Nkrumah Mushelenga, US Vice-President Biden, Chancellor Merkel, Bill Clinton, President Lula, Pres Cardozo of Mexico are among the many leaders that have been spotted on our TV screens watching the games in South Africa. It seems to me that Namibia is being seriously bypassed by these visiting Heads of State. Could you not arrange stopovers even for a few hours so that these leaders could visit? What is our High Commissioner in Pretoria doing about this?
City Fathers Please…
WHEN will Cimbebasia have a taxi rank and shopping centre?
– Concerned Resident
I WOULD like the City of Windhoek to find a permanent solution to taxis in front of Shoprite. That one way is being blocked by taxis on a regular basis. Please if you can do something.
CITY of Windhoek please do something about dogs moving on streets in Katutura. All dog owners should be compelled to keep their dogs in their yard. Is it not against municipal regulations to let dogs move in the street uncontrolled or is Katutura an exception? Would you please give the public feedback on this?
I WOULD like to ask the Municipality of Windhoek why they told people to close the taps? We are dying here at Havana No 2. People from Freedomland closed the taps and we don’t know where we are going to get water any more. We want the Municipality to come and have a meeting here.
Education
THIS question goes to the Minister as he seems to be a very understanding person. Dr Abraham Iyambo why should there be unemployed teachers in the country while in some schools of 1 000 learners there are only 32 teachers. We all want to see better results. But if a teacher is teaching more than two subjects there can never be effective teaching. We need more teachers.
MINISTER (Abraham) Iyambo while the country has a shortage of qualified doctors, recent graduates are stuck in Europe due to travel tickets that a certain director in your ministry failed to arrange. Shake up your Ministry from within.
POLYTECHNIC of Namibia. Dr (Tjama) Tjivikua kindly note the following concerns. The registration fee of N$2 000 per semester is too high. There are no study facilities like libraries or classrooms at regional centres except Khomas. There are no permanent tutors in the regions and it is too costly and inconvenient for distance students to always travel to Windhoek for vacation schools. How can the registration fees increase from N$1 000 to N$2 000 while there are no proper structures at regional centres.
– Ndalulilwa Haimbodi, distance student, Oshakati.
In and From the Regions
WALVIS Bay Municipality please train your staff members working with tender documents. We really want excellent service.
WHERE is this country heading to? Theft in Otjozondjupa region week in and week out. Very deplorable.
– A-List Aukelo
ELECTORAL Commission of Namibia, please appoint regional coordinators in their respective regions of residence. All regions have capable people with ample experience.
WE at Oshipanda village in Oshigambo area want the Onandjokwe hospital outreach to come and visit our area at least once per month.
ONGWEDIVA NaTIS should implement a writing system for learner’s licences so we have time to think, because if you stop to think they say next time. We are losing money here!
WOERMANN Brock and other retail outlets who are going to the regions, thanks for that. But what about the South?
Health Matters
AS we youth who are living with HIV-AIDS have nowhere to find a job, we want the Minister of Health to set up counselling training for us to help the next generation

PLEASE can you provide the public with information on where to go in case of grievances against the banks because Namfisa maintains that it only deals with insurance companies.
NBC
THE NBC PPV Card is a great idea but must have an incentive eg Gold 10 per cent discount; Silver five per cent and Blue none.
– Proud viewer.
Service Please
BANK Windhoek Karasburg. How is it possible that you had only one teller operating on July 1 which was a very busy day.

Responses to recent SMSes
I AGREE with the SMS regarding a marriage valid for three years. The divorce process is taking long too. That’s why it is difficult for some women to move on.
I AGREE with the suggestion of contract marriage.
DRINKING alcohol in public is also not allowed, so why don’t the smokers also stop smoking in public? And in case you didn’t know drug and alcohol abuse are not the only things that are causing problems. People also die from smoking and people rob other people for spare change to buy cigarettes.
DEAR dog eater. It is unethical to eat dogs because dogs bind emotionally to people. They are pets and they will give their lives for their masters, which cattle or goats won’t do that.
– Agnes
OVERLY rigid teachers could be detrimental to the emotional development and wellbeing of young learners. Trying to control them by beating and giving them red cards can cause them to become rebellious, aggressive and uncooperative. Please Oranjemund Private School change your way of punishment.
– Concerned parent.
THE very same Namibians who didn’t want the ABSA takeover of Bank Windhoek are the ones who don’t bank with our only local bank but rather bank with the foreign-owned banks. Let’s support local.
Correction MCA Namibia bought over 700 000 textbooks and not chairs please! These textbooks are for English, maths and science for Grades 5 – 12.
– Beneficiary
WHAT does ten litres of alcohol mean ? Ten litres of spirits or ten litres of beer? Big difference! And when you exclude all young kids this would be at least two litres of beer for each adult per day!
Note: Please get in touch and we will direct you to the study these figures come from.
