LONDON – ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, the rags-to-riches tale of a Mumbai tea boy who wins big, swept the board at the British Academy Film Awards (Baftas) in London on Sunday with seven prizes including best film.
In a star-studded ceremony, Kate Winslet picked up the Bafta for leading actress for her role as a former Nazi prison camp guard in ‘The Reader’, while Mickey Rourke took the leading actor gong for ‘The Wrestler’.
Winslet beat rivals Angelina Jolie, Kristin Scott Thomas and Meryl Streep to take the second Bafta of her career – she won best supporting actress in 1995 – although she will be competing against Streep and Jolie again at the Oscars.
Penelope Cruz won best supporting actress for her role in Woody Allen’s sparky romantic drama, ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’, an honour she said came as a complete shock.
Heath Ledger was awarded a posthumous Bafta for best supporting actor for his performance as the Joker in ‘The Dark Knight’.
