Shidjuu lose out to Edwards

NAMIBIA’S Abnerk Shidjuu lost the Commonwealth flyweight title on points to Britain’s Chris Edwards on Friday night.

The judges scored 115-114, 115-114, 115-114 after the Namibian went to full distance in his first true international bout on foreign soil.Shidjuu has now lost three times from his 12 professional fights and it will be back to the drawing board for the Namibian, who is due back in the country this week with his trainer and promoter Nestor Tobias.Edwards has now extended his record to 14 wins from 31 fights, while he has lost 14 times to date.Shidjuu was the only Namibian to fight on the Ricky Hatton Promotions card on the night and is also the first ever Namibian to vie for the flyweight Commonwealth title. The only other Namibian who has won the Commonwealth title is Ali ‘Silent Assassin’ Nuumbembe, but in the welterweight category.Shidjuu never fought overseas; his only fight outside Namibia’s borders was in South Africa. The Namibian could not obtain the result, if any, of Harry Simon’s scheduled fight against Kenya’s Douglas Otino in Nairobi on Saturday. Simon’s promoter, Kiriata Kamanya, refused to talk to The Namibian yesterday, while several Kenyan news websites also did not have any story on the fight.
