Whilst the rest of Windhoek is dormant and quiet and preparing for a hectic week on a Sunday evening, one corner – generally referred to as the Old Breweries – remains full of life.
The Bank Windhoek Fu-Jazz project is fast developing into a cult event, with the Warehouse Theatre filled to the brim on Sunday evenings. Last weekend Erna Chimu performed in front of an appreciative audience. An impromptu encore by some German jazz maestros visiting the capital, featuring the remarkable Ulrike Wahren and husband Pete Stolle, put the cherry on top of a very special jazz event. This coming Sunday features another Namibian jazz lady of excellence: the one and only Sharon van Rooi.Sharon van Rooi learned the ropes at the College of the Arts. She plays the piano, writes her own songs, performs and teaches music. She took part in the Pulakena, Kedish and Ditsala projects, which were recorded on CD. She also features as one of the ‘Handful of Namibians’ on the CD of the same name. Sharon comes with her own band, ‘Just Jazz’, consisting of Dave Webster on drums, Tayo Casinda on bass and Woytek Majewski on keyboards.Lars Hierath joins in on saxophone and flutes.Doors open at 19h00 at the Warehouse Theatre and the show kicks off at 19h30. This is in order to prevent jazz on Sunday evenings leading to blues on Monday mornings. Advance tickets and tickets at the door cost N$30. The event forms part of the Bank Windhoek Arts Festival.
