SEDI Jacobs found the going hard in the U/16 girls’ final when she lost to top-seeded Theresa van Zyl of South Africa at the ITF Southern African Junior Tennis Championships on Saturday at the National Tennis Stadium in Windhoek.
The 14-year-old Namibian prospect lost the match 6-2, 6-0 in a quick final that was dominated by the older Van Zyl.’Today I was not playing at my best and my concentration was off for some reason,’ Jacobs said after the match.’Theresa played some very good shots and the fact that she was at her best also contributed to the win for her,’ she added.Jacobs had beaten Janet Koch of South Africa 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 to reach the final on Friday. Van Zyl beat Shan Wong Hon Chan of Mauritius 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals.In the boys’ U/16 final, Lloyd Harris of South Africa beat Zimbabwean Courtney Lock 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in an emotionally charged match, with both players often querying line calls.In the boys’ U/14 final, Luneta Chisomo of Malawi beat South African Jandre Lessing 6-2, 6-3.Nadine de Villiers of South Africa won the U/14 girls’ final after she beat Randy Randrianasolo of Madagascar 6-4, 6-3.Yannick Mwinga of Zambia was the winner of the boys’ U/12 after beating his compatriot Barnabas Malaba 6-3, 6-1 in the final. Two Zimbabwean players made it to the final of the girls’ U/12 final, which was easily won by Kimberly Bhunu after she beat Beverly Matsiwe 6-0, 6-1. The president of the Namibia Tennis Association, Bob Mould, said he was very happy with the level of tennis at the week-long tournament that had 11 countries participating.’The standard of tennis was very high and the spirit exhibited by the players was great,’ Mould said.’The tournament was a success and we look forward to hosting another one in the future,’ he added. – namibiasport.com.na
