Second fish harvest at Keetmans

THE Minister of Fisheries, Dr Abraham Iyambo, on Friday officiated at the second harvest of tilapia and carp bred at Keetmanshoop’s Fonteintjie Fish Project.

Founding President Sam Nujoma had been invited to attend but could not make it due to other commitments, Keetmanshoop Constituency Regional Councillor Hilma Nikanor told The Namibian.Nikanor said the popular tilapia fish was sold out shortly after the harvest. Nikanor said the main objective of the project is to focus on youth development and job creation. According to Nikanor, plans to expand the project to breed more fish are hampered by the availability of big enough plots of land – 15 to 20 hectares is needed. She added that the Fisheries Ministry was ready to pump in money to expand the project.’If the expansion plans realise, the community being the beneficiaries will take full ownership of the project,’ said Nikanor. According to Nikanor, the project, which started in 2006, still relies on financial assistance from the Karas Regional Council. luqman@namibian.com.na
