School construction on track

THE construction of new classrooms at the Faith Primary, Hillside Primary, Hage Geingob Secondary and Moses Garoëb Primary schools in Katutura is progressing and the builders are confident that the classrooms will be finished by January 17 when schools across the country reopen.

Gibbs Plumbing is building four classrooms and a storage room at the Faith Primary School. Foreman Alvenus Ndundu said construction started on December 13 and he and nine workers worked right through the holidays in an effort to finish on time. ‘We are on target and it is only the rain which is giving us slight problems as we cannot plaster when it rains,’ he added. The roof should be completed by Friday and then plastering the classrooms in the rain would no longer be a problem. Cabinet last year allocated to the Ministry of Education an additional budget of N$84 million for the building and renovation of schools and hostels. With the money 186 classrooms will be built throughout the country. Desks and chairs will be bought for about 19 000 children as well as beds and mattresses for another 3 600 staying in hostels across Namibia.
