SA’s Gian Groen live in Windhoek tonight

South African Afrikaans singer, songwriter and founder of the hard rock group Spinnekop Gian Groen is in Namibia.

The show, featuring blues singer Riaan Smit, will take place at the Village Garden in Windhoek on 31 May.

Groen is known as the creative force behind Spinnekop, and is fast becoming one of the most prolific songwriters in South Africa.

His music has deepened and matured, and now his sharp, tongue-in-cheek social commentary is augmented with hauntingly beautiful love songs.

Groen invites music enthusiasts across Namibia to join them for an unforgettable evening.

“The hospitality of the Namibian people will always an inspiration. Among many other of my songs, I will be performing ‘Vier Seisoene Kind’, which is the most covered song in the history of Afrikaans. I will also perform ‘Namib Woestyn’, which describes my deep affection for this beautiful country. I do really look forward to spending time in Namibia,” Groen says.

Adding to the highlights of the evening, Namibian artist Smit says Groen is an incredible songwriter and it is inspiring to perform alongside him and learn from his years of experience.

Smit believes that it is important for local artists to share a stage with international artists, as it has the potential to create opportunities for learning and a chance to get invited to other countries to perform.

Smit urges the public to join the show, saying they look forward to entertaining the public.

“We call it a cultural exchange as we get a chance to invite and be invited. Gian Groen invited me to perform at his home once upon a time and I am returning that favour by inviting him to my home,” he says.

“I hope Namibia can realise the importance of the arts, and how its value boosts the local economy dramatically,” Smit says.
