Saga Of The ‘Blocked’ PIN

Saga Of The ‘Blocked’ PIN

RECENTLY my Nedbank card was swallowed by the ATM. I had mixed accounts (cheque and saving) and PIN numbers. There are no names or account numbers printed or embedded on the Nedbank card!

I got a new card for N$80 and was asked to create a new pin number. Armed with a new card and the key number in my head I confronted the ATM. It took the card after one (correct) try. A Nedbank employee retrieved the card and asked me to draw money at the teller. I punched in my number in front of the teller and got what I wanted. To my surprise the same thing happened the next day again. The ATM ‘ate’ my card after one try. The explanation later given was that I had (unknowingly) chosen a blocked PIN number. Which was changed again for another N$80. I reported the facts, that you can draw money with a blocked PIN number at the teller with a card which would be held back from the ATM, to the head office of Nedbank Namibia in Windhoek. I got a Namibian answer which was as usual uncommitted and therefore unprofessional. For the testing of their faulty software I would have expected a written excuse with apologies. The journalists I contacted were not interested in this serious loophole of the software of Nedbank. Their reaction was simple Namibian. Why don’t you change bank?Japie Van WykWavis Bay
