SADC urges support system for land

THE South African Development Community (SADC) has called for the fast-tracking of the establishment of a financial and technical support system to implement land reform in the region.

“We cannot run away from our historical duty to set right these historical wrongs and injustices. In a much civilised way we want to create fair and just mechanism,” said Benjamin Mkapa, the outgoing Chairperson of SADC.Mkapa said the development and long-term stability of the region demands that SADC takes a co-ordinated approach to issues of land distribution, utilisation and administration. He said SADC had set up a Regional Land Reform Committee to support its efforts.Mkapa was addressing the SADC summit in Grand Baie, Mauritius.Analysts gave the proposal thumbs up, saying there is no reason why land reform cannot become part of the regional integration.- NampaIn a much civilised way we want to create fair and just mechanism,” said Benjamin Mkapa, the outgoing Chairperson of SADC.Mkapa said the development and long-term stability of the region demands that SADC takes a co-ordinated approach to issues of land distribution, utilisation and administration. He said SADC had set up a Regional Land Reform Committee to support its efforts.Mkapa was addressing the SADC summit in Grand Baie, Mauritius.Analysts gave the proposal thumbs up, saying there is no reason why land reform cannot become part of the regional integration.- Nampa
