The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Electoral Advisory Council (SEAC) is conducting its pre-election assessment in Namibia ahead of the 27 November national elections.
The delegation will be in Namibia, engaging stakeholders from 29 July until 6 August.
In an interview with Desert Radio, Leonard Sasa from Botswana said the delegation is assessing the political and security environments.
“Namibia is part of SADC, and there are some SADC guidelines that each and every member state must follow. And we are here as SADC to conduct the pre-mission to see if everything is in order,” he said.
Sasa said the council will assess legal frameworks and the Electoral Commission of Namibia’s (ECN) preparedness to conduct the elections.
He said the report from the council will advise the SADC Electoral Observation Mission to start preparing for the observer mission, and after the engagement, they will meet with different political parties.
Sasa said they are going to engage youth organisations, women organisations, disability organisations, the ECN, the minister of foreign affairs, the police and other stakeholders.
“The ECN assured us that they have implemented some of the recommendations made by SADC, which is a good move,” he said.
In November, the council will be releasing preliminary reports on its findings.
