Agriculture and natural resource ministers from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states have been invited to attend a preparatory meeting in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from February 11 to 14.
The meeting is to prepare for an extraordinary ummit on agriculture and food security to be held by SADC in Dar es Salaam this April. The summit in Tanzania would map out strategies to accelerate development, ensure food security and reduce poverty in the region, said SADC.According to the SADC Secretariat, “with sufficient resource allocation and investment in agriculture, coupled with appropriate infrastructure support and water management, the region can be assured of food self-sufficiency, food security and reduced poverty by 2015”.The summit is expected to come up with a declaration by the SADC heads of state, on their commitment to revamp agriculture in the region.This would be done through the implementation of an envisaged Regional Action Plan, the secretariat said.The summit in Tanzania would map out strategies to accelerate development, ensure food security and reduce poverty in the region, said SADC.
