SA man breaks speeding record at 192 km/h

A SOUTH African man was fined N$5 000 for clocking 192 km/h in a Ford Fiesta on the road between Usakos and Arandis on Thursday.

Andrew Lock was caught in a speed trap halfway to Arandis.
Police escorted him to the Swakopmund Police station, where he was arrested. He was released on bail of N$3 000.
On Friday, Lock appeared in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court, and was found guilty on a charge of speeding.
According to Deputy Commissioner Ralph Ludwig of Nampol’s Traffic Department, Lock’s 192 km/h was the highest speed yet recorded by a car in a Police speed trap in Namibia.
About a year ago a motorcyclist was booked for doing 212 km/h in the south of the country, he said.
Ludwig said from 15 January, maximum sentences for driving offences will become the norm in a concerted effort to curb road crime.
Meanwhile, according to Sydney Boois of the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, 95 people were arrested for drunken driving at the coast over the festive season, compared to 32 the previous year.
He said in the other 12 regions, about 35 people were arrested for the same offence.
