Namibian fans of the late Whitney Houston will soon be able to celebrate the diva’s contribution to the world of music when some of South Africa’s top female singers stage a Diva’s Tribute to Whitney over the weekend.
Windhoek-based events management company, Global Entertainment, have organised two massive shows to be staged in Windhoek and Swakopmund tonight and tomorrow night, respectively.The Divas comprised of Sasha-Lee, Karin and Jody – all former winners of the coveted South African Idols competition – with little known Mady taking up the fourth slot. Both shows will hosted by Mandla from crack South African soapie ‘7de Laan’.The Windhoek show will take place at the Show Grounds, which has become a venue for top class shows by highly-rated South African acts in recent months, while the Swakopmund event will be staged at the Community Hall tomorrow night.Of the four songstresses Jody Williams, Idols winner from 2007 needs little introduction especially after her five-star performance with The Rockets at the Windhoek Show Grounds towards the end of last year.The young singer with the powerful voice won the fourth season of the competition along with the hearts of local fans with her rendition of Tina Turner and Celine Dion’s songs, backed by the dynamic Rockets.Karin Kortje won Idols in 2005 and is described as one of the most popular winners. In her hometown of Grabouw, Karin was also a member of a local band, going by the name Elgin Aires Dance Band, which is known for their “lang-arm” type of music. She is also referred as the Aretha Franklin of South Africa.Sasha-Lee Davids was a co-winner of the 2009 Idols competition with Jason Hartman, during what was described as a “unique announcement in the history of the Idols”, by M-Net Chief Executive Officer Patricia Scholtemeyer.Sasha-Lee was born in Atlantis in the Western Cape.Tickets for the Windhoek show are selling at N$140 and they can be bought via Computicket or at Shoprite or Checkers stores countrywide.Coastal fans will pay N$150 for the Swakopmund event and tickets can also be bought through Computicket and at Shoprite and Checkers outlets.
