MOSCOW – The Russian Open, part of the European PGA Tour, which was scheduled to take place in Moscow from August 6-9, has been cancelled for financial reasons, promoter Hans Cooleman said yesterday.
‘The event was cancelled because the majority of sponsors seriously cut the tournament’s budget,’ he said.
‘Some companies were forced to break their sponsoring deals for financial reasons.’
‘We tried to find new sponsors for the tournament but failed to overcome the problem completely because of lack of time,’ he added.
Cooleman also said that he believed that next year the tournament would take place in Moscow. ‘Now we have enough time to solve all the problems before next year’s event,’ he said. ‘I hope that the financial crisis will abate next year.’ – Nampa-AFP
