A MEMBER of the National Council has called on the Ministry of Mines and Energy to increase its budget for rural electrification.
Dorothy Kabula (Swapo) said it had taken many years for the programme to get off the ground in the Caprivi Region because the budget was too low to interest qualified contractors.
Those companies prepared to do the work at the price ended up unable to deliver, she said.
‘For example in 2006, the Caprivi Region had a budget of around N$740 000. This is a very limited budget because to electrify a village of around 40 households, situated some 15 kilometres away from the power grid, costs one million and above,’ said Kabula.
She said there were only three electrified villages in the Linyanti constituency.
Kabula was speaking during debate on the budget allocation of the Ministry of Mines and Energy in the National Council.
