Rundu manages its solid waste

RUNDU – The Municipality of Rundu has launched a solid waste management project, in partnership with its Dutch twin town of Nieuwegein.

Chief Executive Officer of the Rundu Town Council Lukas Muhepa on Friday expressed appreciation for the financial assistance of N$150 000 that the city of Nieuwegein had made available for the project. Muhepa said Rundu had been classified as one of the dirtiest towns in the country – a label which he said had discouraged tourists from visiting the town.Muhepa said the objective of the waste management project was to provide an efficient, cost-effective and hygienic waste disposal system. He said the project had since its inception early this year created employment for many disadvantaged members of the Rundu community, mostly women. The project aims to introduce refuse bins to the community, particularly in the three pilot areas to educate them to be responsible citizens and to keep the environment clean. At least 800 waste bins would be placed in the three pilot areas of Safari, Nkarapamwe and Donkerhoek as from next week.Another 4 000 bins are also expected by next month and would be distributed to other areas of the town, including Tutungeni location. The Mayor of Nieuwegein, Cor de Vos, commended the Rundu Town Council for managing to clean-up the town.”It now looks better than when he visited two years ago”, De Vos said. The Nieuwegein Mayor said waste management was a very important issue for all the municipalities in the world. He advised that education of young and old people about the environment could help to keep the town clean.- NampaMuhepa said Rundu had been classified as one of the dirtiest towns in the country – a label which he said had discouraged tourists from visiting the town.Muhepa said the objective of the waste management project was to provide an efficient, cost-effective and hygienic waste disposal system. He advised that education of young and old people about the environment could help to keep the town clean.- Nampa
